Abstract:

An area of Torlesse Supergroup rocks lying between the Forbes River and Carneys Creek, tributaries of the Havelock River, Upper Rangitata Valley, are mapped and described. A thick massive siltstone unit in upper Carneys Creek and Murphy Stream yields a Kaihikuan (Middle Triassic) fauna and is proposed as a new formation, the Carneys Creek Siltstone. This siltstone may be as much as 1.5 kilometres thick.
The other undifferentiated Torlesse Supergroup rocks consist mainly of massive, indurated, moderately to p&ly sorted fine feldsarenite sands, witi1 interbedded fine siltstone bands. Metamorphism to prehnite-pumpellyite metagreyv1acke facies has been experienced. Regional strike is approximately northeast/southwest, with a vertical dip •. Younging directions are obtained from graded bed sequences and cross laminated sediment, and indicate possible isoclinal folding. Faulting is recognised within the area.
