Upper Cretaceous terrestrial sediments derived from a fault scarp formed in the Rangitata Orogeny were deposited in a tectonic valley. With rapid erosion, peneplanation conditions prevailed inland. Near the coast deltaic and swamp environments existed prior to a marine transgression in the Haumurian. The succeeding Notocene marine units have been examined inn some detail in order to determine the environment in which they were deposited. In later Tertiary times the sediments were subject to folding and faulting of the Kaikoura orogeny. Marine beach sands and loess were deposited in the area during the fluctuating Pleistocene sea-levels.
