Abstract:

The mining history and geological environment of a sulphide occurrence in a greenschist at Waitahuna River are summarised, the mineralogy and textures of specimens are described, and their origin is discussed. The hypogene ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, and minor sphalerite; supergene alteration is not significant. Marcasite, and the later of two main pyrite phases, are believed to have formed from pyrrhotite. Syngenesis resulting from volcanism is suspected, but the textures are considered to be of metamorphic origin. The deposit is similar in mineralogy, environment, and probably its origin, to that at Moke Creek.
