Abstract:
The scheelite-bearing quartz reefs of Paradise District transect the flat-lying Haast schist at the northern tip of Mt. Alfred. They occupy zones of shearing within the grey pelitic schist lithology and consist of several lodes of hydrothermally emplaced quartz bodies that bear sub-economic quantity of scheelite. This report is a geological investigation of the Paradise quartz-reef system and as such discusses the salient features of lode geology and its post-metamorphic emplacement.
Structural and textural observation reveal the lode to be comprised of massive and laminated quartz with various amounts of altered schist inclusions. Mineral textures and phase relations indicate no definite time-related sequence of mineralisation.
Major and trace element analysis of the unaltered and altered host rock show a nett gains and losses of the major oxides but no appreciable changes in the trace element concentration.
A brief resume of scheelite chemistry is included and the ore genesis model of Henley et al (1976) is adopted here as an adequate model for scheelite mineralisation in the Paradise District.
