Abstract:
The Dunton Range is located due east of the Te Anau Downs and west of the Livingstone Range. It is an isolated block of Permian volcanogenic rocks, surrounded by the tertiary sediments of the Te Anau Basin. The range consists of argillite, arkosic sandstones and breccia, intruded by porphyritic and aphanitic dykes. These are inferred to be be Eglinton Volcanics and occupy the greatest proportion of the range. Juxtaposed against the volcanic rocks are two occurrences of biotite gneiss and a trondhjemite. The gneiss is mylonitised and indistinct from those of Fiordland. They are named Mackay Intrusives.
The rocks are faulted and metamorphosed to prehnite-pumpellyite, pumpellyite-actinolite facies. Faunal evidence suggests that they are Permian - Braxtonian in age. A positive magnetic anomaly lies over the Range. The volcanic rocks are inferred to be volcanic arc basalts, part of the ancient Eglinton Valley- Takitimu Range island arc.
