Stratigraphy of mainly upper triassic sediments of the Northern Hokonui Hills.

A 4 km thick sequence of Middle - Upper Triassic sediments (Taringatura Group) is mapped over an area of some 75 km 2.
An attempt is made to subdivide the sequence on lithostratigraphic and/or biostratigraphic criteria. Two new formations are introduced; the Bluff Sandstone (Upper Oretian) and the Spirit Burn Formation (low - mid ( ?) Otamitan).
The Otapirian Stage sequence is studied in detail and a biostratigraphic subdivision is proposed. The depositional paleo-environrnent of these sediments is reassessed.
An importamt fossil assemblage from the Otamitan is recorded and examined. The assemblage is assessed in terms of its paleo-environment.
