              <text>Murihiku and Maitai strata in the Wairoa-Lee and Wai-iti rivers areas form two parallel NE trending sedimentary belts; the Murihiku occurring as a number of imbricated fault blocks, the Maitai synclinally folded (Nelson Regional Syncline) and imbricated by SE dipping reverse faults. Eight formations ranging from upper Etalian to Otamitan (Middle to Late Triassic) are mapped in the Richmond Group, Murihiku Supergroup, including one new unit, the Church Valley Formation (Oretian). Nine formations are mapped in the Maitai Group, including one new unit, the Chrome Creek Formation. and a three-fold subdivision is recognised, comprising the Barrington Subgroup (new), Port Hardy Subgroup (redefined after Waterhouse 1987), and the Stephens Subgroup. Mappable Late Permian atomodesmatinid limestone and sandstone bodies up to 1-2 km dimension within the Stephens Subgroup are allochthonous and informally referred to as Martins olistoliths. The highest in situ Perrnian fauna occurs in the Tramway Formation. Petrologic correlation of Martins olistoliths and Wooded Peak Limestone suggests a Dorashamian age for the latter. Durvilleoceras woodmani Waterhouse 1973 is assigned to the family Flemingitidae, and together with cf. Hypophiceras sp., suggests an Induan (Early Triassic) age for the Greville. A new ammonoid fauna collected from limestone olistoliths in the lower Stephens Subgroup is described, and indicates a maximum early Olenekian age for the Stephens Subgroup. The Perrnian fauna is characterised by atomodesmatinids,locally bryozoans and brachiopods, the Triassic faunas by ammonoids,locally echinoderms and sessile foraminifera. Age considerations and rudite petrology suggest a hiatus within or between the lowermost Maitai and underlying Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt. Murihiku rocks belong entirely to zeolite mineral facies. Three metamorphic zones are mapped in the Maitai (laumontite, lawsonite, prehnite-pumpellyite). The sporadic occurrence of lawsonite in the lawsonite zone probably largely reflects volatile activities, nature of replaced phases, and partially bulk composition. The Maitai Group was derived from a largely calc-alkaline continental volcanic arc and deposited mainly by sediment gravity flows in a deep, elongate eastward sloping basin. Turbidite paleoflow was mainly obliquely along the basin with locally perpendicular to opposing flows suggesting point sources along the western margin. Small scale (up to ea. 40 m thick) coarse tuff turbidite sequences reflect episodes of explosive volcanism. Formation scale (hundreds of metres thick) laterally extensive (hundreds of kilometres) repetition of sandstone dominated and mudstone dominated units must be extrabasinally controlled and is attributed to fluctuations in relative sea-level. Contourites (largely terrigenous with a very small hydrogenous component) and direct fallout tuffs are locally evident. Sedimentary olistoliths/clasts in the Stephens Subgroup were formed in a shallow to marginal marine environment to the west of and largely contemporaneously with the Maitai. The geochemistry of igneous conglomerate clasts, tuffs, and probably also epiclastic sediments has been significantly modified during diagenesis and/or prehnite-pumpellyite and lawsonite-quartz-albite facies metamorphism of the Maitai Group in Nelson. Colour of Maitai sediments reflects primarily oxidation state of iron and abundance of carbonaceous matter, and secondarily metamorphic mineralogy. Red (hematitic) mudstones are possibly slightly enriched in iron. The hematite is probably largely detrital but some diagenetic to metamorphic effects are locally recognised. Three petrological suites are distinguished in the Maitai Group: (1) Barrington Subgroup (lower Maitai); characterised by atomodesmatinid debris and dacitic tuffs in addition to ubiquitous mafic volcanic detritus. The Tramway Formation also includes quartz- and phyllite-rich litharenites indicating additional plutonic and low-grade metasedimentary provenance. (2) Port Hardy Subgroup (middle Maitai); comprising largely epiclastic mafic volcanogenic sediments. (3) Stephens Subgroup (upper Maitai); characterised by andesitic to rhyolitic tuffs in addition to the ubiquitous mafic volcanic detritus. Reworked shell fragments are common in Stephens rudites. The Richmond Group (Murihiku Supergroup) was derived from a largely calc-alkaline continental volcanic arc and is probably entirely marine. Shellbeds are common and largely worked by marine processes. Bottom current deposits are locally evident. Conclusive sediment gravity flow deposits (paleoflow ranging from SE-NE directed) are only recognised in the Te Arowhenua-Wantwood and Church Valley-Saxton formations which formed as submarine channel-overbank complexes. Although probably shallow marine the depositional environment and processes of the other units remains unclear. Te Arowhenua-Wantwood (Etalian to Kaihikuan) and Garden-Problematica-Max (upper Oretian to Otamitan) formations are largely volcanogenic,locally tuffaceous. The Wells Formation (Kaihikuan) had a mixed granitic and tuff provenance, and Church Valley-Saxton formations (lower Oretian) largely granitic provenance recording unroofmg of shallow volcanic-arc plutons and temporary cessation of explosive volcanism.</text>

              <text>A measured section through the Taringatura Group in the upper Otamita Valley is presented. The units recognised in the section have formed the basis of mapping in the areas north-west and south-east of the section. 
The area is affected by the North Peak Flexure, and mapping confirms that the internal radius of this fold has been shortened by the northward displacement of wedge shaped blocks, with dimensions in the order of kilometres. 
The Taringatura Group represents a mainly regressive sequence, with the lower part of the section dominated by deep-water turbidites, interbedded with ash, debris-flow and bottom-current deposits. Higher in the sequence shallow water deposits predominate, including some with storm-generated sedimentary structure. The depositional model proposed is that of the progradation of shelf and slope facies over a gently plunging trough axis. Two disconformities interrupt the sequence and each may represent uplift and subaerial erosion. 
New Zealand mid-upper Triassic series and stages are recognised. Parts of the section may be subdivided on lithological grounds and, in addition to recognizing existing rock units, three new lithologic zones are proposed: the Mervyn Peake Flysch Zone, the Overton Silstone(Zone) and the Caroline Tuff Zone. Of these only the latter is of regional extent. 
Clast composition varies from andesitic, with minor granitoid, at the base of the Taringatura Group, to rhyolitic-dacitic with abundant granite, and finally at the top of the group, a return to andesitic. Detrital quartz and alkali feldspars, rare throughout most of the section become abundant in upper Warepan and Otapirian strata.
Petrography and the abundance of air-fall ashes suggests that the site of deposition was a basin associated with and receiving detritus from an area of active arc volcanism.</text>

              <text>Lithologic and biostratigraphic mapping of the Wairaki Hills was commenced to provide detailed geologic maps on which to base data subsequently derived from palaeontological study. Faunas found were collected quickly durin9 mapping and ;field determinations were noted. Some rich localities were collected more thoroughly in later visits. The geologic age range of the rocks was found to be Makarewan (?Djulfian~Dorashamian) to Oretian (?late Carnian) , with a break in deposition between the latest Permian and earliest Triassic (ie. Dorashamian~smithian). In the laboratory, collections gathered in the field, as well as collections gathered by others previously, were prepared and all secure taxa available were described and drawn. The process resulted in identification of at least 17 new genera, perhaps as many as 22 , as well as a plethora of undescribed species. Recognition of foraminiferids and ostracods within the sediments opens new fields of study in New Zealand Triassic fossils. Other important finds include productinids and a crassatellid from the Wairaki Formation, Eophyllites from the Malakovian (Smithian) and a nautiloid, cidaroid, buchiid, beyrichitid, cirriped and trigonioid from the Etalian Stage (Anisian). 
The faunas are regarded as marine, shallow shelf forms (probably mostly above wave base) and most collections are regarded as essentially in situ assemblages. After collation of data on biostratigraphy, informal stage definitions were attempted and successfully used; the base of the Makarewan Stage was drawn at the first appearance of Wairakiella rostrata at the type locality, the Malakovian Stage base at the first appearance of OWenites~ and the Etalian at the first appearance of Mellariwn at the type locality. Correlation with other New Zealand rocks of equivalent age is made as well as an attempt at correlation with important world faunas and sequences of equivalent _age. The Makarewan Stage is correlated with t.he Pju1fian~Porashamian Stages of; the world standard, t,he Malakovian wit,h the ;Late Smithian Stage and the Etalian wit,h the Yarium Zone of the Anisian Stage, The need for a more refined zonal scheme for New Zealand Triassic rocks is acknowledged and the systematic palaeontology section of this thesis is regarded as a necessary preliminary step ~n establishment of such a scheme.</text>

              <text>A 4 km thick sequence of Middle - Upper Triassic sediments (Taringatura Group) is mapped over an area of some 75 km 2. 
An attempt is made to subdivide the sequence on lithostratigraphic and/or biostratigraphic criteria. Two new formations are introduced; the Bluff Sandstone (Upper Oretian) and the Spirit Burn Formation (low - mid ( ?) Otamitan). 
The Otapirian Stage sequence is studied in detail and a biostratigraphic subdivision is proposed. The depositional paleo-environrnent of these sediments is reassessed. 
An importamt fossil assemblage from the Otamitan is recorded and examined. The assemblage is assessed in terms of its paleo-environment.</text>

              <text>A detailed geologic map is presented of an area in the Wairaki Hills to the immediate east of the Takitimu Mountains (western Southland). The area involves rocks of the Takitimu Group, Productus Creek Group, Malakoff Hill Group and Cenozoic strata. 
The exact position and nature of part of the Takitimu GroupMalakoff Hill Group Contact is established and the Productus Creek GroupMalakoff Hill Group contact is described and inferred to be an angular unconformity.
The Productus Creek Group is subdivided on a newly modified basis into four formations. The Elsdun Formation is redefined to incorporate the Weetwood Member which is interpreted on the basis of some new observations to be a lava flow, coeval with the Elsdun Formation. 
A number of new occurrences of Productus Creek Group are described, including a large body here named the Pleasant Creek Formation, from which a trilobite was collected and is here described. 
A large folded block of downfaulted Malakoff Hill Group is described and correlated with the Discaria Formation (Begg 1974), on the basis of general lithology and a tuff marker horizon. A lower Triassic plant fossil and a Daonella sp. fossil (Etalian Stage indicator fossil) are described from these rocks. On the basis of the relationship between Discaria rocks and a tuff marker horizon which can be traced through much of the Southland Syncline (Coombsl9SO, Watters 1951, Boles 1971, Begg 1974), an Etalian Stage is proposed for certain strata of the North Taringatura Hills and the Hokonui Hills. 
Petrographic studies of Productus Creek Group and Malakoff Hill Group sandstones provide evidence that Takitimu Group rocks were metamorphosed to prehnite - pumpellyite facies assemblages, uplifted and eroded during early to middle Permian time and into Triassic time. 
Strata of suspected Tertiary (possibly Cretaceous) age are mapped and described lithologically, and it is shown that some coarse sandstones contain pyroclastic detritus. . 
Inferences are made with regard to environments of deposition, metamorphism and structure.</text>

              <text>INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE OF WORK
An investigation of a section through the central Takitimu Mountains is presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the B.Sc. (Hons.) Degree to the Geology Dept., University of Otago, New Zealand. 
The Takitimu Mountains lie to the S.E. of Lake Manapouri in the South Island, (map 2 ) and consist of a chain of peaks approximately 24 miles long and rising to a maximum height of 5,582 ft. (Spence Peak). The mountains are free of ice and snow in the summer, but there is evidence of past glaciation (plate 1). 
Three weeks were spent in the field, from the end of January to mid-February, 1961. Mapping was restricted almost entirely to the upper reaches of the Aparima River, from the Braxton Ridge to the Aparima Peaks (frontispiece) A sketch map based on aerial photographs is included with this report (map 1). 
The section investigated includes Lower Permian rocks of the Takitimu Group, constituting the bulk of the mountains, together with the Lower and Middle Triassic sediments. In the Middle Triassic, the Etalian and part of the Kaihikuan stages of the Gore Series have been mapped. All the rocks clip in a general easterly direction and constitute part of the western limb of the Southland Syncline. There is, however, evidence to suggest that the rocks of the Takatimu Group are strongly folded.
 A few miles south of the section investigated, the Productus Creek Group outcrops, but the only indication of this group in the Aparima area was the discovery of two boulders of Productus Creek limestone in the Aparima River. 
 Several new fossil localities in the Kaihikuan and Etlian stages, and one from the Permian (Takatimu Group) are recorded. Several thousand feet of greywacke and siltstone underlying the base of the Etalian are placed tentatively in the Lower Triassic. They would appear to constitute a new Pre-Etalian stage yet to be defined. Fossil localities from these Lower Triassic sediments are also described. 
 The validity of four species of the ammonoid genus Parapopanoceras set up by Browne ( 1952) is discussed and a genus of brachiopod new to New Zealand is recognised and recorded.
 A brief petrological study of the rocks of the Takatimu Group,and the Triassic greywackes and siltstones has been made. The rocks of the Takitimu Group belong to the prehnite-pumpellyite metamorphic facies, while the Triassic sediments belong to the heulandite zone of the zeolite facies. 
 Some aspects of the clay mineralogy of the Triassic siltstones are included in an appendix.</text>
