<text>South Victoria Land basement consists of Neoproterozoic metasediments and metavolcanic rocks which make up the Skelton Group. The Skelton Group was intruded by mafic and felsic plutons and dykes of the Granite Harbour Intrusives during the Ross Orogeny. Ages of plutonic rocks indicate that the Ross orogeny lasted from at least 550Ma (latest Neoproterozoic) to 477Ma (Ordovician) The metasediments of the Skelton Group are now metamorphosed and deformed but originally included intraformational conglomerates, greywacke, siltstone, mudstone, limestone and impure limestone. Coeval with sedimentation was intrusion and extrusion of basaltic plugs, sills and pillow lavas with P- and TMORB chemistry, and trachyte and rhyolite extrusives. These igneous rocks have an origin involving crustal contamination and indicate that the Skelton Group formed in a continental rift environment younger than 680Ma and probably younger than 630Ma. There has been variable deformation and metamorphism of the Skelton Group between lower green schist and upper amphibolite facies. Lithostratigraphic mapping of south Victoria Land is not possible due to extensive disruption and reconstitution of the Skelton Group during the Ross Orogeny. The Lower Baronick Formation (conglomerate and bimodal volcanics) is the only formation that is recognised and is sufficiently undeformed that bedding can be recognised. For mapping purposes, south Victoria Land is sub-divided into fault bounded sub-blocks (c.l-20km in size) each of which has had a relatively coherent geological history during the Ross Orogeny. These sub-blocks are grouped into one of four main structural blocks. Some of these four main blocks contain rocks with a wide range of structures and metamorphic grade. The southernmost block is the Skelton Block which covers 1400km2 and consists of 9 recognisable sub-blocks. Some of the sub-blocks, including Lower Baronick Formation, are relatively undeformed whereas others are totally reconstituted. The Skelton Block contains the least deformed rocks which yield the most information on the origin of the Skelton Group. The Koettlitz Block (290km2) contains two greenschist facies sub-blocks which are relatively unstrained, but very little is known about this block due to limited exposure. The Walcott Block (730km2) is made up of 5 sub-blocks. The sub-blocks include greenschist facies rocks preserving clastic textures, mid to upper amphibolite facies schists and migmatites and there are some high strain gradients between less deformed and more deformed rocks. The Walcott Block underwent extensional tectonics during the Ross Orogeny. The northernmost Dry Valleys Block (4600km2) consists of thoroughly transposed and reconstituted upper amphibolite facies schists and no sub-blocks have been recognised. Dry Valleys Block underwent extensional, compressional and strike slip tectonics during the Ross Orogeny. The boundaries between structural blocks appear to be steeply dipping NW striking faults. Only one of these faults, the Frio Shear Zone, is exposed and forms the boundary between Walcott Block and Dry Valleys Block. Frio Shear Zone has had a complex structural history of reactivation throughout the Ross Orogeny and the latest movement along which uplift of the Dry Valleys Block occurred is sinistralnormal. Some block boundaries are cut by Granite Harbour Intrusives whereas other block boundaries cut Granite Harbour Intrusives. The geological histories of the four main blocks indicate that compressional and extensional tectonics were probably coeval during the Ross Orogeny. The geological histories also reveal that uplift of the four structural blocks may have occurred at different periods during the Ross Orogeny resulting in a complex interrelation between plutonism and deformation of the Skelton Group. Structural blocks of the type mapped in south Victoria Land can be mapped in north Victoria Land and elsewhere in the Transantarctic Mountains. These blocks preserve results of Ross Orogenic processes at different times and places and at different crustal levels throughout the Transantarctic Mountains. A series of NW striking faults are recognised in north Victoria Land which are related to the same tectonic regime as those NW striking faults identified in south Victoria Land and indicate offset of the Ross Orogen in the Victoria L~nd segment of Antarctica. Neoproterozoic continental rifting in south Victoria Land is younger than that of Windermere rift related metasediments in North America and is not a direct temporal correlative has been suggested in association with the SWEAT hypothesis. Correlation with possible rift events near the Cambrian-Precambrian boundary in North America is also plausible.</text>

<text>Baement rocks forming the subject of this report include a range of variably deformed granitoid mafic plutonic bodies and the Koettlitz Group into which they intrude. Deformation, and intrusion were part of the Cambrian-Ordovician Ross Orogen . . The Precam brian Koettlitz Group is the oldest group of rocks in The Dry Valleys area. The Koettlitz Group can be divided in to two northwest trending belts, one dominated by marble, the other lacking marble and containing considerable amounts of intercalated orthogneiss. Quartzofeldspathic rocks are present in minor amounts, the sequence being dominated by amphibole, diopside and biotite rich lithologies. The exact origin of this group is unknown although it appears to represent a highly altered meta-sedimentary and meta-basite sequence. These rocks were subjected to intense deformation and accompanying pluton intrusion which resulted in inhomogeneous distribution of strain and widespread chemical change on regional and local scales. Deformation was continuous during amphibolite facies metamorphism and is described here in terms of three 'generations', characterised in the Koettlitz Group primarily by folding. The first generation was pervasive and resulted in extensive transposition and destruction of all original structures. The second generation consists of locally developed, open to tight folds and associated structures deforming those of the first generation. The third generation consists of large scale warping.
High strain zones initiated during local and regional deformation preserve evidence for strain induced metamorphism, element mobility and chemical exchange between dissimilar lithologies on the scale of tens of metres. In these high strain zones, deformation of gabbroic material induced the metamorphic reaction hornblende -> biotite + quartz and promoted element exchange between meta-gabbro and the neighbouring Koettlitz Group and granitoids. On a regional scale, calc-silicates within the Koettlitz Group have illustrated the intimate association between deformation, metamorphism and metasomatism and the effects of rheological contrast on strain partitioning. Deformation and associated metamorphism and element mobility resulted in extensive chemical alteration and transposition of the original Koettlitz Group lithologies on a regional scale, producing a tectonostratigraphy bearing little resemblance to the original structure and chemistry. This widespread element mobility and metamorphism is suggested as an alternative explanation for the observed Koettlitz Group chemistry and mineralogy which is typically interpreted as representing isochemical metamorphism. On a local scale the structural response of the Koettlitz Group to deformation was governed to some extent by rock rheology with incompetent marble and schist horizons tending to flow to areas of lower strain.
In response to regional stress, an extensive NW-SE oriented shear zone was initiated and was active throughout deformation governing the location of syntectonic pluton intrusion. Orbicules within syntectonic plutons have indicated that partially molten magma transmits and responds to deviatoric stress by a variety of strain mechanisms including rigid body rotation, magmatic strain solution and fracture. Orbicules also indicate that the strain developed is dependant on the nature and extent of contiguity existing within the pluton and may be influenced by the regional stress rather than stresses arising solely from the inherent motion of the magma.</text>

<text>The Dismal Nepheline Syenite represents a pulse of extremely evolved, alkaline magmatism with carbonatitic affinities. An anhydrous assemblage dominated by hedenbergite, nepheline and alkali-feldspar crystallized at temperatures -600°C, and pressures of -5 kb. Oxygen and C02 fugacities were controlled by the graphite-C02 and FMQ equilibria with logfo2=-19.4 and logfco2=4.4, equivalent to Xco2'"'0.15. Variations in the whole rock chemistry can be explained by fractional crystallization of hedenbergite, titanite, nepheline and to a lesser extent apatite.
Cross-cutting micro melteigite and ijolitic pegmatite lithologies indicate a probable parental magma composition. The Dismal Nepheline Syenite may have been derived from this composition by fractionation of a systematically evolving pyroxene phase. Following crystallization, increasing fn2o and f o2 along with decreasing temperature resulted in the reequilibration of the magmatic assemblage, producing corona assemblages of amphibole, grandite garnet and albite at contacts between hedenbergite and nepheline.
Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios for carbonates range from 813Cp03:=:-2 to 1 %o and 8180sMow=14 to 16%o. These heavy values are attributed to the evolved state of the Dismal Nepheline Syenite magma and isotopic fractionation between calcite and graphite.
There is unequivocal evidence of interaction between the intrusion and surrounding Koettlitz Group marbles. The effect of marble assimilation, however, appears to be confined to the contacts and is not considered to be the driving force responsible for the undersaturated nature of the intrusion, the formation of the corona textures, and the heavy carbon and oxygen isotopic signatures .</text>
