<text>Late Cretaceous-Paleocene nonmarine and shallow marine sediments of Pakaha Group in Kaitangata Sub-basin, 80 km south of Dunedin, provide a useful reference for exploration of the mainly-offshore Great South Basin. Deposition occurred in adjacent passive and actively subsiding zones west and east of Castle Hill Fault. Castle Hill Fault, a southern coalescence of Titri and Tuapeka Faults, has a northerly trend within the study area and extends offshore to the southeast. East of Castle Hill Fault, a lower 500+ m thick coal-bearing interval of Taratu Formation is overlain by a ~ 180 m thick interfingering assemblage of Latest Cretaceous-Paleocene paralic sediments; informally referred to as 'Golf Club succession' (GCs). GCs comprises a series of eastward-prograding, tide-influenced sandy pebble conglomerate units (included in upper Taratu Formation) and westward-onlapping transgressive sandstone bodies (included in Golf Club Member ofWangaloa Formation). Shoreface sandstones are locally cemented with calcite, dolomite, magnesian siderite, framboidal pyrite, and alkali feldspar. Clear authigenic overgrowths on detrital potassium feldspar grains are found throughout Wangaloa Formation. Evidence of syndepositional sulphide diagenesis related to meteoric groundwater seepage in the shoreface zone (massive pyrite cement, chimney structures, and pyrite-cemented walls of Rhizocorallium trace fossils) is present in one transgressive sand body. Tidal influence during deposition of granule and pebble conglomerate units interbedded with shoreface sands is indicated by abundant examples of paired mud drapes, tidal bundles, and Teredolites in transported wood. Mud-draped straight-crested conglomerate megaripples of ~ 1 m wavelength preserved in the upper part of GCs exposed near W angaloa Domain provide evidence of increasing activity of ocean swell waves approaching from the east. Overlying GCs, the upper 45 m of Wangaloa Formation assigned to Mitchells Rocks Member (MRM), consists of fine-grained sandstone and shell beds composed mainly of turritelline gastropods. Hummocky and swaley cross-stratification, megaripple bed-forms, and abundant Ophiomorpha burrows in MRM are consistent with deposition in a storm-influenced shoreface setting. Early Paleocene shoreline transgression and deposition of MRM across Castle Hill Fault zone in the Benhar area reflects a cessation in growth faulting, reduction in local coarse-grained sediment supply, and relative sea level rise. Anomalously high gamma radiation emitted by MRM is associated with monazite-bearing heavy mineral concentrations composed mainly of degraded ilmenite (pseudorutile) and zircon sand. Heavy minerals are interpreted to have been concentrated in the foreshore and</text>

<text>Tertiary sedimentation in the area about Puysegur Point, S.W. Fiordland, New Zealand, began in the Lower Oligocene. Puysegur Formation, the basal stratigraphic unit of the sequence, comprises lower deltaic plain and delta mouth coals, mudstone, sandstones and conglomerate, marine beach sands, and near-shore tide deposited sands and mudstone, interfingering with breccia conglomerate deposited as alluvial fans backed against Ordovician basement.
Conformably overlying Puysegur Formation, the Sealers Formation consists of terrigenous muddy flysch interbedded with thick sandstones, medium to thin bedded sandy flysch, and locally, conglomerates near the base. The conglomerates and thickly bedded sandstones were deposited from inertia flows in feeder channels incised into muddy flysch of the inner submarine fan and basin slope. The graded and massive bedded sandy flysch sediments represent proximal turbidity current and inertia flow deposition on the middle fan. Soft sediment deformation structures are abundant, reflecting an inherent instability of the depositional slope. Derived from local basement, sandstones are arkosic. Mudstones contain a kaolinite-illite clay mineral assemblage. The trace fossil Chondrites is characteristic of the fine grained sediment.
Outcropping as a fault bounded structural block, the highest stratigraphic unit, Chalky Island Formation, comprises about 390m of calcareous turbidites. Generally, each bed grades from sand into montmorillinite-nanno-marl and is terminated by a nanno-plankton chalk interbed. Several amalgamated thick sandstone units and rare breccias are present, representing a progradation of the submarine fan. The sandstones are arkosic and contain a transported, shelf derived, abraided macrofauna. Flute and groove molds indicate a southerly turbidity current flow direction, parallel with the subsequent main tectonic trend.
The chalk beds accumulated during periods of no turbidity current deposition, largely from fall-out of nannoflora from the euphotic zone. Some thickening of the chalk from low velocity bottom current redeposition may have occurred. Examined by both light and scanning electron microscopy, the nannofossil assemblage has strong open ocean affinities. The moderately well preserved Lower Oligocene assemblage is dominated by coccoliths of the Ericsonia ovalis, Chiasmolithus oamaruensis, and Reticulofenestra umbilica species groups.
A diverse suite of trace fossils in Chalky Island Formation is dominated by ichnogenera, notably Zoophycus and Chondrites, that have been identified from Recent and fossil ocean floor drill cores. This contrasts with the typically littoral assemblage in Puysegur Formation. The change in sedimentation style, from largely traction current deposited fluvio-marine sediments in Puysegur Formation to inertia flow and turbidity current emplaced sands of Sealers Formation, together with oceanic oozes in Chalky Island Formation in equated with an episode of rapid tectonic depression of northerly trending flysch troughs of west Southland and Westland.</text>

<text>In the Inangahua and Fletcher Creek areas, North Westland, Greenland Group greywackes and argillites, into which the Tuhua Group granitic rocks have intruded, are unconformably overlain by lower Tertiary to lower Pleistocene transgressive and regressive sediments.
Several reference sections in the Tertiary strata have been measured, of which the thickest totals over 1000 m, and is subdivided into the Brunner Formation (coal measures), Island Formation, sandstone and algal limestone and the Kaiata Formation, mudstone, interpreted as a transgressive sequence. The Cobden formation, unconformably lapping onto the Katata Formation is delimited at its base by a breccia, deposited during Whaingaroan basin warping and basement faulting and at its top by a glauconitic phosphatic richly fossiliferous horizon.
The regressive sequence is represented by the Inangahua Formation of graded bedded foraminiferal limestones, sandstones and silts conformably overla1n by coal measures in Fletcher Creek. Overlying the coal measures is a thin sequence of fossiliferous marine strata or possibly Waitotaram age, overlain by Old Man Gravels deposited at the beginning of the Kaikoura Orogeny.
Calcareous Algae and a Teredinid are described in detail.</text>

Olivene-hypersthene-magnatite intergrowths indicate the formation of hypersthene from olivene by oxidation rather than magmatic reaction.
Disseminated iron-titanium oxides, and iron and copper sulphide minerals are widespread but are not present in any economic quantities.
X-ray work on metamorphic pyrrhotite and micro-textural relations in magmatic iron-titanium oxides indicate metamorphic and magmatic temperatures greater than 550*C and 700*C respectively.
