              <text>Ruapuke Island lies to the north-east of Stewart Island in Foveaux Strait. The area mapped consists mainly of dioritic rocks with small amounts of older gabbro and hornblende hornfels. A region of heterogeneous diorite is formed by partial assimilation of hornblende hornfels by dioritic magma. Trondhjemite, hornblende gabbro, granodiorite dykes and pegmatite veins have been examined and mapped where size permits.&#13;
Metamorphosed flows, dykes and volcanic sediments of the hornblende hornfels, and the gabbro pluton, are correlated with the Brook Street and Eglington volcanics, probably forming part of an extensive Permian volcanic arc. &#13;
Diorite and hornfelsic rocks are cut by basic dykes of hornblende-andesite composition, some of which have been intruded into hot dioritic magma. Field relations and petrography suggest that diorite emplacement may have taken place in more than one phase. Intrusive activity probably extended from late Permian into the Triassic. Devereux, McDougall and Watters (1968) have dated a tonalite from South Point by potassium-argon mineral dating at 217 m.y.s. &#13;
Whole rock chemical analyses and mineral analyses of Ruapuke rock types have been compared to published analyses of Stewart Island and South Island contemporary rocks.</text>

              <text>Late Quaternary sediments in Shag Point and south Oamaru have been investigated. The Hillgrove Formation and loess deposits are distributed consistently throughout the coastal area. &#13;
The lower part of the Quaternary sequence, Hillgrove basal gravel, consists predominantly of greywacke gravels and m1nor sands and silts. Two ecologic groups of macrofauna are recognised, intertidal and subtidal species. Intertidal species are Melagraphia aethiops., Micrelenchus tenebrosus., Cellana genera and the subtidal fauna consists primarily of Ostrea lutaria. This study clearly shows that paleoecology of these Quaternary sediments has close similarities with ecology of the modern fauna. Foraminifera paleoecology is in agreement with macrofauna and indicates shallow water environment. The restricted shallow water benthic foraminiferids, Notorotalia zelandica and Elphidium charlottensis are recorded abundantly. Paleoclimatic interpretations from planktic foraminiferids and Nonionella flemingi suggest a cold climate during deposition perhaps slightly cooler than mean sea temperature in present day. This evidence in conjunction with several radiocarbon 14C dates of shells (&gt;45,000 yr.B.P.) and stratigraphic relationship with overlying sediments (loess deposits), suggest the Hillgrove basal gravel was deposited in Otiran Glaciation under interstadial conditions. &#13;
The upper part, Hillgrove loose sand, is massive 1n exposure, always shows a gradational boundary with overlying sediments, and an absence of cross-bedding, suggesting a possibly beach origin. On the other hand sedimentological analyses including granulometric study and SEM investigation on quartz texture show strong evidence for an eolian origin. &#13;
Loess deposits were classified into several types according to stratigraphic relations, macrofeatures and sedimentological analysis. The loess BI, moderately hard silt loam, shows conspicuous jointing pattern distinctively high proportion of green-hornblende, and is texturally coarser than other loesses. Heavy mineral study, particularly through ZTR index (Zircon-Tourmaline-Rutile) implies the presence of "intrastratal solution" in heavy minerals. This reflects the increase of maturity in older loess deposits. This might be associated with diagenetic features on the surfaces of quartz grains as quartz crystal growth, solution pits and adhering particles. Clay minerals have been observed in loess however it was not possible to distinguish between loess horizons on the basis of their clay minerals. Allogenic clays are presumed to consitute most of the loess, these are obviously of illite and kaolinite. Minor authigenic kaolinite is also present. Study of grain orientation in loess deposits gains two source paleowind directions, the central Otago and eastern Otago continental shelf. This interpretation accord with heavy mineral's provenance. &#13;
Mineralogically the loess deposits are usually homogeneous, with angular monocrystalline quartz predominant. Feldspar consists mainly of plagioclase whilst potassium feldspar was found in minor quantity. Heavy minerals in loess are distinctive from other sediments (e.g. Hillgrove Fm, Recent sediments), phyllosilicate heavy minerals are in high percentages. &#13;
In beach studies, grain slze analysis and dispersal pattern of some heavy minerals suggest longshore transport of beach material in a northwards direction. Furthermore it also noticed that the Shag River supplies considerable amounts of beach material to the Shag Point beaches, more obvious in phyllosilicate heavy minerals.</text>

              <text>The mineralogy and structure of two gabbronorite intrusions forming Bluff Hill, is described. They intrude volcanogenic metasediments of the Greenhills Group and together comprise a segment of Brook Street terrane (Coombs et al. , 1976) , the inferred products of a Permian island arc environment. &#13;
The Bluff Hill Gabbronorite is of arc-tholeiitic affinity and appears to represent the middle zones of a small south-west dipping pluton, the upper levels now removed by erosion. Mineralogical differences and a fractionation trend revealed by microprobe analysis of co-existing pyroxenes provide information on the structure and orientation of the pluton. The original magma was rather hydrous, as evidenced by the abundance of hornblende and the low temperatures (850° ~ 100° C) obtained from co-existing pyroxene geothermometry. A convection current origin is put forward to explain -several··strongly flow-banded, thin xenoli thbearing zones within the main mass. &#13;
A segment of upper level Ocean Beach Gabbronorite, also of tholeiitic affinity,is described from Bluff Hill's western coast, which appears to post-date the Bluff Hill Gabbronorite. &#13;
Later intrusives include several thick basaltic andesite (?) dykes, innumerable thin hornblende microgabbro veins and dykes, occasional hornblende pegmatite veins and diorite dykes. &#13;
A Tertiary strandline deposit, the Foveaux Formation (new formation) is described. Its rich brachiopod and warm-water benthic foraminifera fauna would suggest a Waitakian to Otaian age. The cement consists largely of the zeolites thomsonite, gonnardite, and chabazite together with minor well-crystallized smectite and gibbsite.</text>

              <text>Lithologic and biostratigraphic mapping of the Wairaki Hills was commenced to provide detailed geologic maps on which to base data subsequently derived from palaeontological study. Faunas found were collected quickly durin9 mapping and ;field determinations were noted. Some rich localities were collected more thoroughly in later visits. The geologic age range of the rocks was found to be Makarewan (?Djulfian~Dorashamian) to Oretian (?late Carnian) , with a break in deposition between the latest Permian and earliest Triassic (ie. Dorashamian~smithian). In the laboratory, collections gathered in the field, as well as collections gathered by others previously, were prepared and all secure taxa available were described and drawn. The process resulted in identification of at least 17 new genera, perhaps as many as 22 , as well as a plethora of undescribed species. Recognition of foraminiferids and ostracods within the sediments opens new fields of study in New Zealand Triassic fossils. Other important finds include productinids and a crassatellid from the Wairaki Formation, Eophyllites from the Malakovian (Smithian) and a nautiloid, cidaroid, buchiid, beyrichitid, cirriped and trigonioid from the Etalian Stage (Anisian). 
The faunas are regarded as marine, shallow shelf forms (probably mostly above wave base) and most collections are regarded as essentially in situ assemblages. After collation of data on biostratigraphy, informal stage definitions were attempted and successfully used; the base of the Makarewan Stage was drawn at the first appearance of Wairakiella rostrata at the type locality, the Malakovian Stage base at the first appearance of OWenites~ and the Etalian at the first appearance of Mellariwn at the type locality. Correlation with other New Zealand rocks of equivalent age is made as well as an attempt at correlation with important world faunas and sequences of equivalent _age. The Makarewan Stage is correlated with t.he Pju1fian~Porashamian Stages of; the world standard, t,he Malakovian wit,h the ;Late Smithian Stage and the Etalian wit,h the Yarium Zone of the Anisian Stage, The need for a more refined zonal scheme for New Zealand Triassic rocks is acknowledged and the systematic palaeontology section of this thesis is regarded as a necessary preliminary step ~n establishment of such a scheme.</text>

              <text>The Rotokawau eruption occurred approximately 13 kilometres northeast of Rotorua about 4000 years ago, and produced two overlapping tephra rings of pyroclastic deposits. The western vent is now occupied by Lake Rotokawau, while a chain of aligned and coalesced craters 2l kilometres east of Lake Rotokawau mark the vents for the eastern activity. &#13;
The pyroclastic deposits are documented and described; they comprise airfall, base surge and ballistic ejecta of essential and lithic material, 0.7 km 3 in volume. &#13;
Eruption style of the western vent, a maar type volcano, was surtseyan, or phreatomagmatic. Deposits are widely dispersed over 70 square kilometres. A maximum thickness on the crater rim of nearly ten metres decreases to one metre four kilometres from source. Proximal base surge deposits are present on the lake shore, dipping towards the centre of the crater. These are irregular beds up to one metre thick of hard and very poorly sorted block and ash material. All other exposures are made up of many thin (l-10 cm) layers of alternating base surge (type A: (distal) fine, ashy, poorly sorted and coherent tephra) and airfall (type B: loose-,c fJ:Table, well sorted tephra) deposits. Grain size analysis provided a distinction between type A and type B deposits based on size and sorting parameters. Grain size characteristics of Rotokawau samples are presented. &#13;
Activity from the eastern vents was both surtseyan and strombolian in style, reflecting lesser interaction between magma and water .. Deposits around these craters are more cone-shaped, maximum thickness is about 20 metres. Tephra is generally coarser than that of western deposits, with a lesser amount of lithic component. Particle morphology reveals a contrast between dense, blocky fragments of phreatomagmatic origin, and light, highly vesiculated scoriaceous fragments which reflect the greater degree of importance of magmatic gas release in the franentation of the magma. Both morphologies are found in eastern samples, only phreatomagmatic fragments are present in western samples. &#13;
Essential, or juvenile, material is high alumina basalt derived from partial melting of anOsubsequent segregation from the mantle at depths of 30-35 km. Geochemical data are presented and these indicate a temperature of crystallisation (and eruption) of ll50°C. &#13;
Parameters of magnitude are calculated for the eruption. Rates of emission were about 6.4 m3/s at initial velocities of about 150 m/s. Column heights are inferred to have averaged 4.5 km and reached a maximum of 10 km. &#13;
The Rotokawau eruption occurred from the Otataina centre of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Although this volcano is unlikely to re-erupt it can be seen as representative of an eruption style of this volcanically active zone. An eruption sequence of Rotokawau type would be extremely violent near source, characterised by frequent base surges, and would deposit perhaps a metre of tephra up to 4 km from the vent.</text>

              <text>The Taratu Formation sediments, as seen in north east Otago are described. The name Taratu is previously unused in this area but should apply to all the lithologically and stratigraphically equivalent non-marine quartzose conglomerates of (at last) the Otago area. 
Thirteen depositional facies are recognised with their interpretation being that of either fluvial or littoral origin. Textural study allows the description of five textural facies based on grain-size analysis. One textural facies dominates that of sandy gravel, and typical exposures contain a predominance of coarse over fine-grained sediments. 
Scanning Electron Microscopy allows the recognition of two end member quartz types (milky and clear quartz) with a gradation between. Authigenic precipitation of kaolinite and quartz is also seen. A macroflora from Livingstone is described and the discovery of the only fossil insect (an impression of a beetle larvae) at present known in the New Zealand fossil record is reported. 
The Taratu Formation is of possibly significant economic importance being a large scale low grade placer gold deposit. Coal is also found in localised lenses. 
Facies model interpretation of the Taratu Formation, in the light of existing outcrop, is that of a pediplainlike deposit which formed with deposition in braided rivers which flowed on top of a peneplain surface of deeply chemically weathered Haast Schist. Analogy with contemporary savanna areas is made. 
The age of the Taratu Formation in north east Otago ranges from late Cretaceous to Eocene.</text>
