It is situated on the south side of the Oreti River at the western end of the Hokonui Hills. The area studied is north-east of Mossburn and covers the south and east flanks of West Dome, Black Ridge and part of Conical Ridge. Black Ridge lies between two streams, the Acton to the west and the Diston to the east. The rocks of the area studied can be divided into (a) Recent river gravels and Pleistocene glacial outwash and terraces. (b) Upper Palaeozoic and lower Mesozoic rocks consisting of steeply dipping overturned sediments and volcanics. (c) Serpentinite mass with associated tectonic inclusions. This serpentinite is the southern extremity of the Great Ultramafic Belts of Coleman (m.s.) Broadly, the Great Ultramafic Belts of New Zealand occupy a weak crustal zone in the Upper Palaeozoic sediments and volcanics, constituting what has been termed the marginal geosyncline. The serpentinites and ultramafics of this type occur as discontinuous, thin, elongated belts occupying one broad stratigraphic zone within the folded geosyncline (Wellman 1952). The work was undertaken in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree or the University of Otago. The area covered corresponds roughly to the Budle Survey district of Central Otago, which includes the upper catchments ot Sheepwash Creek and Nenthorn Stream aa well as parts of Taieri Ridge, Billy's Ridge and Emerald Ridge. The work was undertaken with the purpose of adding to the regional geology of North-East Central Otago, an area where a composite picture or the geology is slowly being assembled from the detailed study or individual parts or it. The region is of special interest for many reasons. Structural investigations of the Otago Schists, because of the size of the structures involved, requires the close examination of rocks over a very large area. It is hoped that the compiling of data from very amall areas such as the preaent one will gradually elucidate their atructure. It is hoped that a regional picture or Tertiary marine transgression, volcanic extrusion, and Tertiary block faulting, will eventually emerge. It is underlain mostly by schist but also includes several small Tertiary outliers of basanitic volcanics resting on a thin formation of quartz sands and conglomerates. The lithology, mineralogy and structure of the schist are reported. From these studies the following conclusions are made: (1) bedding in a wide range of thicknesses is recognizable in the schist, (2) the area lies within a biotite and possibly garnet zone of metamorphism, (3) retrogressive metamorphism occurred and appears to have been accompanied by a deformational phase, (4) there were at least two phases of deformation during the metamorphic period - the first may have produced large-scale recumbent folds. A section on the post-metamorphic geology includes a study of the sedimentary and volcanic formations, post-metamorphic structures, and geomorphology. A post-metamorphic history is given and compared with the regional geology. It appears that the area was stable throughout the lower and middle Tertiary.
