Abstract:

The Mt. St. Cuthbert Range is situated south of the North Otago township Omarama. The principal rock type is quartzofeldpathic greywackes of the Supergroup. The field area is subdivided into six, structurally complex Large scale folding dominates the geology in the Mt. St. Cuthbert, paio and Benmore Blocks. Two previously undescribed faults, the Old Creek and Boxwood Stream, are mapped and two un-named faults, the burn and Prohibition Road faults are named. Three units (Massive Sandstone, Interbedded Sand and Mud and Fades), based on associations of fades described by Mutti and Ricci( 1972), were used to map the Torlesse. A middle fan is envisaged as the itional environment. Point counts were performed on thirteen slides and modal analysis of in the area shows a low proportion of lithic fragments. The sediment Omarama Torlesse is derived from two sources; a volcanoplutonic and older uplifted Torlesse. A new Kaihikuan fossil locality, H39 If 16, is described and Mentzeliopsis spinosa, Alipunctifera kaihikuana, Chlamys kakanuia and Maorirhynchia nuggetensis are identified.
